Aligners such as the well known Invisalign system aren’t actually braces at all, they are plastic moulds worn over the teeth that are changed every two weeks.
They can be used for some simple orthodontic treatments and are extremely popular owing to the wearer’s ability to take them out to eat and for activities like sport, singing and public speaking. They are really discreet too, so much so that people will usually have to be told they are there before they notice them.
Being removable, aligners are easy to keep clean, which means it will be easy for your child to keep their teeth clean too during treatment. One of the main benefits is that your child’s diet won’t be as restricted, whereas hard or chewy foods may have to be avoided with fixed braces and food can become entangled in them making them difficult to clean.
Your child will still have to be diligent with their oral hygiene though, which means brushing and flossing after each meal, and they will need to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day, only removing them to eat.
We offer our own equivalent of the brands you will have probably heard about such as Six Month Smiles, Invisalign and Inman Aligner. Treatment begins with a computer model mapping how our specialist orthodontist wants your child’s teeth to move, which is then used to produce the aligners.
